Die Schone Mullerin, one of Schubert’s most famous song cycles, tells the story of a young Wanderer who comes upon a brook. He follows it to the mill. There, of course, he falls in love with the Mullerin of the title, but his love is unrequited. In truly Romantic fashion, he obsesses and despairs and ultimately.. drowns. Or perhaps becomes one with the brook.. While we wouldn’t dare change a thing about our Wanderer’s journey, we just couldn’t leave you without a happier ending! This year’s spring-time Schubertiad goes even further, beyond the brook.. Our second young wanderer is a Shepherd – yes, you know the one: on the rock – but this time, the journey ends in the joyful anticipation of Spring and rebirth.
